Frederick Alfred Kelsall was from St Johns, Workington, Cumberland. He was born in July 1896 in Workington to Leah Elizabeth Whitehead, age 25, and Frederick Kelsall, age 29, born Hanley, Staffordshire.

His mother Leah Elizabeth passed away in October 1905 in Cumberland, England, at the age of 34. His father passed away in 1933. He had a sister, Caroline who married John Steel Stroughton
