Families in Brandon, Iowa; Cincinnati; and West Virginia continue from 1860.
There are three households in Philadelphia. One recorded as “M” is Mary previously seen in 1850. A second household was headed by Joseph and Phebe with Ann, possibly Joseph’s mother and children Eliza and Joseph. Joseph and Phebe were born in England but I have not been able to find a matching family in the England census. There is a record for a Phebe Kelsall born about 1850 arrived New York 25 Oct 1873 from Liverpool, spinster no family members, but she does not match.
Philip Kelsall b about 1826 arrived New York 5 Aug 1873 from Liverpool by Queenstown, Ireland – with wife Betsy, children Eliza, Sarah, Eva. This is Philip Ashton Kelsall married Betty Dunkerley, Ashton under Lyne 1860, resident at Duckenfield in 1861, and in 1871 with children Eliza Ann, Sarah Ellen and Edie. Philip does not have his family in the 1870 census but they are present in 1880 in Chester, Delaware, now with Philip’s mother Betty. Philip died in Hammonton, New Jersey in 1896. Mother Betty (nee Lees) died in 1881.
Samuel Kelsall was born 4 June 1820 at Great Sankey. He went to Castlemaine, Australia in 1854 where he was the first Mayor. He arrived in New York from Glasgow, 19 August 1867 with wife Christian and son Samuel. They moved to Reno, Kansas where he owned land and a business. Samuel first appears in the US Census in 1870 with family Christiana, born Scotland about 1818, Georgina, born Scotland about 1849 and Samuel born Australia about 1858. This family tree is described here.
Thomas and Kate Kelsall were residents of Lawrence Kansas. Thomas was born in England about 1841 and Kate about 1844. This appears to be Thomas and Catherine Kelsall arrived New York 1868 with also Samuel Kelsall (although Catherine is listed as a spinster). I have not found this family in any subsequent census. Are they possibly related to the family in Reno, Kansas?
Charles m Elizabeth Kelsall first appear in the 1870 census in East Liverpool, Ohio. This appears to be Charles Kelsall born 1821 Burslem, son of Charles Kelsall and Elizabeth Ashworth. The son Charles arrived New York 1848 with Anne Kelsall, presumably his first wife. Charles married Elizabeth Burgess, a widow in East Liverpool 1852. The census does not show any children.
A family at Lafayette, Indiana has head of household Bell and Children Fanny, Adie, Laura and John. John Kelsall first appears in the 1870 census in Louisville, Kentucky. John was born in England about 1847/1848. He appears again in 1880 with wife Martha born in Kentucky and children John, Samuel and Oliver all born in Kentucky. John married Martha Crowell in Jefferson, Indiana in 1871. He died in Louisville in 1890. I have not found any more information on this family. Possible births for John in 1847 and 1848 are Leigh, Chorlton, Wolverhampton, and Altrincham.
Two families in New Jersey appear to be related. Henry Kelsall born 1820 England was living in Newark with son Thomas. James Kelsall born 1851 New Jersey was in Belleville. This was James Vernon Kelsall born 19 November 1851 to Henry and Hannah Kelsall. I have not found this family prior to 1870. A tree on Ancestry suggests that the family was previously known as Kelsey. It also shows Henry died 10 August 1875 age 56 and that his father and mother were John and Mary. This then indicates that Henry was from Burtonwood, Lancashire where his father was a farmer at Bradley Hall. Henry arrived in New York 29 August 1845.
Alfred and Francis Kelsel born in England in 1847/1850, both tinsmiths, appear in Mount Morris New York in 1870, living with Betsy Altoft a widow born England 1840. Living next door to William and Sarah Pennington and sons Thomas and James. In 1880 Alfred has married Betsy and they have children Ida May, Mary and Fred all born in New York. Alfred has a step daughter Anna Altoft. Looking back in the 1865 New York State census, we see Alfred and Francis B shown as child of William and Sarah Pennington. From this we find Francis Beresford Kelsall born 23 October 1849 to Sarah (Shores) and Edward Kelsall of Manchester. I have not found a birth record for Alfred; was he brother to Francis or perhaps a cousin? I have not found Francis and Alfred in the 1851 census for England. Edward Kelsall married Sarah Shores 1846 Manchester. They are found in the 1851 census but with no children listed. I have found no other records for Francis B Kelsall.
