Different numbers for the population of Kelsall in the 1881 census can be obtained by searching Ancestry (1,558), Find My Past (1,514), Family Search (1,502) and Public Profiler (1,510). Also different totals are obtained by searching individual counties and adding. From evaluation of the various sources I estimate the 1881 population to have been 1,545. The distribution by county is shown in the figure and table. It is noted that 83% were in just three counties, Lancashire, Staffordshire and Cheshire, and 90% in just six counties. The distribution of the Kelsall name is consistent with migration from its source in Cheshire to the neighbouring industrial counties of Staffordshire and Lancashire.
